The Bible refers to the heart many times. However, almost always, God is speaking of our mind (soul), not our physical hearts. This scripture is but one example.
Matthew 5:8 KJV
(8) Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
God seems to be speaking of our internal organ called the heart. But that is not the case. Instead, he is referring to the heart of the mind. It contains our feelings, emotions, and memories and forms what we view as our self-identity or self-concept. Today modern science calls this area of the brain our subconscious mind. They theorize that about eighty percent of our brain function happens in the subconscious mind. Therefore, having a pure heart means having godly thoughts and emotional patterns formed in our subconscious minds.
Identifying an impure mind is also not difficult. Just note the things that come from your mouth.
Matthew 12:34 KJV
(34) O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
When impure words come from your mouth, it is a sure sign that you have stored ungodly thoughts in your subconscious mind. Therefore, it would be best if you replaced these ideas with good ideas.
Restructuring our subconscious mind is not complex but takes time and effort. Fortunately, God gives us the formula for doing this.
Philippians 4:8 KJV
(8) Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Almost all television, movies, and news programs destroy the purity of the mind. Replacing ungodly thoughts with good thoughts is the key to having a pure mind and seeing God.
